A member of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors, I am currently the Musical Director of Pillowell Silver Band. Previous bands I have conducted include Kingsbridge Silver Band, Tavistock Town Band and Plymouth Brass, as well as several other bands on an ad hoc basis in the South West and Midlands. With a strong belief that we should keep the wonderful tradition of brass banding alive at all levels, I try to bring a strong work ethic to any conducting role, whilst maintaining that banding should be fun for all.
We have all sat through tedious rehearsals and played soul sapping concerts but I believe in having fun as players and in giving the audience what they want. People come to listen to a band to be entertained so that’s what I try to do whilst growing the players ability and the standard of the band There are a lot of well arranged pieces that both entertain and challenge these days as well as some fantastic traditional works composed for or arranged for brass bands, so we can easily achieve both aims.
Contesting gives brass players a great opportunity to play things for our own amusement and to stretch ourselves in different ways from performing to the public. Having rebuilt the band, I have been able to win contests with Pillowell and they currently have a full trophy cabinet winning local and regional contests over the past couple of years.
